Part 3 of my epic Shiro haul will cover my new lip tints from the Miyazaki collection.
First, I have to say that I love Miyazaki films. I own quite a few, my favorites including Spirited Away, Howls’ Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. It’s hard to say which one is my favorite, though. I really don’t think I could choose. It depends on my mood for the day! Right this moment, I would say Princess Mononoke. But tomorrow, it might be something different.
I was initially going to pick up the full 5 lip tint collection in this order, but I had seem some swatches other bloggers had done of Come Out, Come Out, and they all said it was extremely sheer. And honestly, from the swatches, you could barely tell it’s there, so I decided to pass on that one. I’m not a “Collection-ist” so it didn’t bother me. I don’t ever feel like I need to own the full collection – just the stuff I actually want.
So, this review will cover the 4 colors I did pick up initially, as well as Come Out, Come Out afterall, which Caitlin graciously sent me when I emailed her with concerns over the scent/flavor of my Chimera gloss.
Let’s start with With Eyes Unclouded. This one, Indie Know said it was one of the most disappointing. But for me, I’m really pleased with this color. It is definitely sheer, but it pulls a dark (but sheer) brick color. It’s a really nice MLBD (my lips but darker) color. Also, it smells like butterscotch, so I just want to eat it. So, I guess the moral of the story is that you never know how things will look on you compared with other people. When I was swatching this one, I regretted not getting Come Out, Come Out. Things work out, though!
I also picked up A Girl and a Cat. The tube that I got was broken, so I emailed Caitlin from Shiro about it. She sent out a full replacement, as well as Come Out, Come Out (since I had mentioned that I don’t like how cinnamon-y the pumpkin cheesecake scent was). I love Shiro. This is why I buy indie! Anyway, A Girl and a Cat is a sheer, beautiful berry color. I can’t figure out what it smells like. It’s sort of berry-ish and sort of butterscotch-y, but not nearly as butterscotchy as With Eyes Unclouded. I like it, but I can’t put my finger on what it smells like.
Come Out, Come Out is pretty low on the pigmentation, but it does give a very (very) subtle apricot tint to your lips. I actually like this a lot, since it’s not super dramatic, it goes with everything.
The next color is It’s Called Love, which is from No Face from Spirited Away, which is one of my favorite Miyazaki films. Maybe even my favorite. In fact, in the area I lived in while in Japan housed one of the inspirations for this film! Dogo Onsen, in Matsuyama, which was the main city in my prefecture, was the inspiration for the outside of the main bath house in Spirited Away! My tube was broken when I turned the dial to get the balm to go up. But, that didn’t keep it from working, so I just went with it. This color might be my favorite. It’s a stunning sheer coral. It’s said that it’s a match for Why Not Zoidberg, which is an Intertube lip product they had a while ago. I don’t really think it is, but maybe that’s just me. It’s a similar coral, but Zoidberg is a bit darker and SO much more opaque. It smells more vanilla-y to me. Soft, but I like it.
Finally, Who Swallowed a Star. This one is from Howl’s Moving Castle, which is another favorite Miyazaki film. This one is the most opaque of all of the colors. It’s a bright orange-red-pink color. On me, I think it shows more reddish pink, but you still don’t lose the orange. One problem for me with this is because the balm tube is so thick, and this color is so pigmented, you have to be really careful when you apply this to stay in the lines. Otherwise you just look like a drunk 5-year old. For me, this one smells like a vanilla-citrus of some sort. Oh, one final note. This color stains slightly.
All of these balms feel amazing on my lips. In fact, they are right up there with Notoriously Morbid’s Coffin Kissers. My lips feel amazing with these on, so I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot of use of each of these. They are all supposed to be scented with French Vanilla, so it’s very interesting that I got similar but different scents from each of them.
Overall, I am super pleased. But I’m also kicking myself for not getting these earlier. Oh well. Better late than never, I suppose!!
