I’ve been wanting to order from Shiro for a long time. But, I kept putting it off. I’m not sure why. They are one of the most known indie companies out there for fabulous eyeshadows, and I’ve seen and heard so many positive things about them.
When Shiro announced on their Facebook page about the 4th anniversary sale, I knew this was my time. It was 15% off, and if you spent over $15 (very easy to do, given how fab their stuff is), you got the anniversary eyeshadow for free. Now, I always love free things. But free lime green eyeshadow?! YES, TAKE MY MONEY!!
I ordered some mini eyeshadows, eyeshadow samples, and some of the Intertubes, which are now discontinued, but are still available on the site. I guess she’s just not making more of them, since she changed her formula or something. Speaking of the Intertubes, I love their weird oval shape because it makes them easier to apply for me than round tubes.
One general thing to note both about the full size and the minis. They are well sealed. There is a sifter on these bad boys, and there is a sticker (with pull-tab) on them. No spillage happening here, which I appreciate. Although, now that I’m used to the loose eyeshadows, these sifters will probably drive me crazy, so I’ll likely try to pop them out at some point. But, it’s nice to have the option.
I made a pretty big order for a first order, but with a discount and an incentive, I went a bit crazy. I got:
Master of Whispers (mini) – Master of Whispers is a really feminine pink color. It’s not really a babydoll pink, though. It’s got more purple than that. It almost feels like a pink with a lilac duochrome. Without the GG or primer, you can see the sparkles a bit better, but with the GG or Primer, you can see purple-pink shift much better. I love this color, and I can see myself wearing this often.
Kaepora Gaebora (mini) – This is a very lovely, neautral, use-it-everday kind of color. It’s a pretty, shimmery taupe. Not very exciting in the scheme of Shiro’s other colors, but probably one of the more practical.
Hodor (mini) – Shiro calls Hodor a “medium near-matte taupe.” I don’t agree with this at all. It has a good amount of shimmer, even without the GG or Primer. But with that, it totally changes. It goes from a pretty nondescript warm taupe color to something much more. Look at the pictures. With the GG, it darkens it to a dark, dusty purple-y mauve with almost a pewter feel to it. Very interesting, and nothing like I was expecting. You’ll notice that over Glitter Glue, you get that awesome complex color. Over Darling Girl’s Primped and Primed, it is more brown-based with that subtle pewter sheen. still very nice.
No Men Like Me (mini) – This color is also not really what I was expecting. I thought I was going to get a “dusty gold” color, but instead, I got darker, more sexy gold. I mean, without any primer, it is a dusty tan color with very subtle gold shimmer, but the minute you put GG under it, it gets a much sexier gold. Almost like a really old gold necklace that’s not shiny and new anymore from an antique store.
The Fourth Be With You (free gift – wahoo!) – This color is intense. Intensely awesome. It’s the color of an Emerald Tree Snake, and I love it. Will I wear this everyday? Probably not. Will I covet this and sometimes look at it lovingly when I need a pick-me-up? Probably.
Mother of Dragons (sample) – I expected that this color would change my life. I heard a lot about it, so I was excited. It didn’t quite do that. I don’t know why. It is beautiful, don’t get me wrong. It’s a really nice dusty brownish purple that has an insane silver/lilac shift to it over GG or Primer (more so with GG – Primer was much more subtle). I like this. I’ll wear this sometimes, I just didn’t jump up and down like I expected. But still lovely.
Livor Mortis (sample — Detrivore Cosmetics product, sold through Shiro) – The Shiro site calls this a “lightly shimmery deep mauve.” I disagree. Without primer, it’s a pretty meh dark purple. Nothing special. But when you put this sucker over GG (and Primer to a lesser extent), you get BAM PURPLE in your face. It becomes a dark magenta-y purple with orange sparkles. This won’t be an everyday for me, probably, but it will definitely make it to my “I love this and need a bigger one of these” list.
Mockingjay (sample) – Go buy this. Right now. Words can’t even describe how wonderful this color is. Even without primer its beautiful. But holy shit. With Primer or GG, it is full-on drop-dead fabulous. It’s a super shiny/metallic copper color, just like a new penny. And an oh-so-sexy penny it is!
Lingered in Twilight (sample) – This is one of the first Shiro colors I ever saw, and I wanted to order from Shiro ever since. So, of course I had to try it. I got a sample though, since I knew this was not going to be something I wore often (ever), but wanted to have the option. It’s just so dramatic, and to be honest, I’m not that dramatic of a person. It’s a really dark forest green, almost black with the most beautiful jungle green shimmer hidden inside. I love it. My husband says this is the color elves would wear, which is very fitting. Just one note about this color, when I tried to wipe my arm off with a makeup remove wipe, this smeared black all over my arm. And it didn’t want to go anywhere, so it required some scrubbing. That might be a bit tough on your eyelid…
Apparatus (sample — Detrivore Cosmetics product, sold through Shiro)) – This color is described as a pale gray with a lavender shimmer. Close. To me, it looks like a pale blue-purple with a pink sheen. Lovely, but I have a feeling to really have it show up at all, you need to pack it on. Even with GG and Primer, it barely showed up.
Intertube: Smashing – This color was nothing at all like I expected. It was much darker. Still very nice, but not the pink-y purple color I wanted. It was also a bit gritty, which I didn’t like. The grittiness didn’t go away upon wear, either, which was sad. I like the color I got, I do… but I wish it matched the picture on the website, because that’s the color I actually wanted…I also included some before and after pictures (after a banana for snack and a full meal of risotto and chicken – yum!)
Intertube: Why Not Zoidberg? – I wanted to try this color, not thinking I would love it quite so much. But I do. It’s a really bright coral color. Love it. It’s very moisturizing too. And lasted a good while. It lightly stained my lips, which is nice, because then it’s a bit less of an obvious fade. I included some before-after pics of it. After includes 2 cups of coffee and a tootsie pop!
Intertube: Leeroy Jenkins – Leeroy Jenkins is the bright blue-toned purple lipstick I wanted. I’ll have to compare it to Oslo Tanzanite, which I also love. I will say that this one smells/tastes much better, and feels more moisturizing. I’ll have to do a full compare, sometime. But, the downside is that this color wears off fairly quickly for me. The after photo is not post-any sort of eating. The after photo is only about 2 hours and 1 cup of hot chocolate later. It’s strange how it pooled at the edges. The others didn’t do that…
Free sample: Baker’s Boy – AHH! I love this. I am so glad I got this as a free sample. It was in my shopping cart, and I opted not to get it in lieu of Hodor, since I thought they’d be similar. Turns out, I was way off. This color is VERY sparkly. It’s a bright copper color (but much less metallic than Mockingjay, and WAY more sparkles) with every single color sparkle known to man. I opened the sample baggie and POOF sparkles exploded everywhere. Normally, that would annoy me. But today, that made me giddy. Thank you for sending me this sample. I would have wondered, and now I know that I love it. And need the full size.
Free sample: Scar (Detrivore Cosmetics product, sold through Shiro) – This is described as a “pale taupe with a violet shift.” I feel like almost all of the descriptions/swatches on the website are off or something! To my untrained eye, it looks like a dark mauve with pink sparkle and a pink shift. I don’t see any taupe at all. But I really like this color. But, it’s very similar to Livor Mortis, except this base is a light gray color, and Livor Mortis has a much darker base color and is ever so slightly more magenta-y. But still, very close.
More pictures, if you decided you haven’t had enough yet!
